Art Still, a former NFL defensive end for the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills, and his wife, Liz, detail Art's diagnosis with hereditary transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) in August 2023. Art discussed how his symptoms, which began in 1990 after retiring from football, were misdiagnosed for over 30 years due to limited awareness of the disease among healthcare providers. The couple founded Still 4 Life, a nonprofit organization focused on raising awareness about ATTR-CM, particularly in African American communities where the V122I variant affects approximately 1 in 25 people. They described their work in partnering with healthcare providers, pharmaceutical companies, and community organizations to educate people about the disease's symptoms, which include carpal tunnel syndrome, joint problems, and heart complications. Art and Liz shared their experience advocating for genetic testing within their family and emphasized the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, noting that while no treatments existed when Art was first diagnosed, effective therapies are now available.
